Partizan Belgrade is going through a dark period in EuroLeague. This Wednesday, the Serbians took a real beating at home against Olympiacos, losing by 38 points (66-104). A seventh consecutive defeat in the competition, symbolic of a team in complete disarray.

A Losing Streak That Keeps Growing

This latest thrashing adds to an already very concerning record for Partizan Belgrade. The club hasn’t won in EuroLeague since December 12, when they secured a victory against Red Star Belgrade (79-76). Since then, defeats have piled up, always with significant margins.

None of the recent losses were by fewer than 13 points, and the streak even peaked at 41 points against Zalgiris Kaunas on December 19 (109-68). Against Olympiacos, the trend didn’t reverse, quite the opposite.

A Quickly One-Sided Match

After a relatively competitive first quarter, won by three points by Olympiacos, the game completely tipped. At halftime, the gap was already enormous (+22, 52-30), before climbing to +36 at the end of the third quarter (79-43). The Greeks definitively sealed the deal in the final ten minutes to win 104-66.

Only Duane Washington Jr (28 points) and Bruno Fernando (11 points) tried to stay afloat on the Serbian side in a collective disaster.

Olympiacos in Collective Dominance

Led by Sasha Vezenkov in great form (25 points), Olympiacos Piraeus delivered an accomplished performance on both ends of the court. Thomas Walkup, Nikola Milutinov, Tyler Dorsey, Donta Hall and Alec Peters all scored 12 points, illustrating the collective dominance of Piraeus.

In this big win, French internationals Evan Fournier (3 points, 2 rebounds and 4 assists in 16 minutes) and Frank Ntilikina (6 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists in 14 minutes, against his former club) didn’t have to force things, in a context largely controlled by their team.

Georgios Bartzokas, Olympiacos coach, looks back on this crushing victory:

« We were very serious for 40 minutes. Particularly, the second and third quarters were very good for us. We moved the ball well, with many assists. Every player who entered the game delivered at least one assist, and some even more. When we shared the ball, we had more scorers. For us, it was important to finish the game with respect for Partizan, not to stop playing in the third quarter. I think we were very good against this Partizan team going through psychological difficulties. They have good players and a good coach, and they need to find a way to play much better than what they showed today. »

Opposite Dynamics in the Standings

Thanks to this victory, Olympiacos returns to the top 6 of EuroLeague with a record of 13 wins and 8 losses. The Greeks are on a two-game winning streak before hosting Maccabi Tel-Aviv, currently 14th (8 wins, 13 losses), on January 20.

Conversely, Partizan Belgrade still can’t escape its disastrous spiral. Between injuries and repeated defeats, the Serbian club occupies last place in EuroLeague with a record of 6 wins and 16 losses.

An Opportunity for ASVEL and Efes

This situation could benefit ASVEL, who has a slight opportunity to widen the gap with the bottom team if they succeed in their next match against Hapoel Tel-Aviv, currently atop EuroLeague. Same logic for Anadolu Efes, facing Baskonia, currently 16th.
