The Cleveland Cavaliers announced Tuesday that Max Strus will be out for at least another month. The 28-year-old forward continues his rehabilitation after left foot surgery on August 26, following a fracture sustained during a summer workout.
A lingering injury for the Cavaliers
The recent medical evaluation and imaging revealed that the fracture needs more time to heal completely. « The evaluation and imaging showed progress, but additional time is needed for the fracture to heal completely, » the Cavaliers stated in their official release.
Initially, Cleveland hoped to see Strus return to practice within three to four months after the procedure. This new timeline far exceeds initial expectations, forcing the team to extend their wait.
The injury occurred unexpectedly during a summer workout. « My left foot cracked when I tried to jump on it, » Strus explained at Media Day. « It’s a bit unlucky and unfortunate, but here we are and we’re managing the situation, I’ll get through this just fine. »
The impact on a team seeking consistency
Strus’s extended absence weighs on the Cavaliers, who hold a 20-17 record. Coach Kenny Atkinson doesn’t hide the player’s importance to his squad: « Obviously, we miss him, right? He has that incredible tenacity that we love having in the locker room. We miss his presence. »
Last season, Strus contributed significantly to the Cavaliers’ success with averages of 9.4 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 50 games, including 37 as a starter. His performances helped Cleveland finish atop the Eastern Conference.
Strus will undergo another evaluation in the next four weeks. « I’ll be ready when the time comes, and I can’t wait to experience that moment, » the player said in late September. « The optimism is still there. The positive vibe is still there. »
