Paris Basketball faces one of the biggest moments in its young European history. This Thursday evening (8:45 PM), in what promises to be an electric Adidas Arena, Tiago Splitter’s men host Alba Berlin to conclude their first EuroLeague season. A final game with high stakes: the Paris club is guaranteed to participate in the play-in, but still has eyes on possible direct playoff qualification.

Paris aims to finish strong and keep playoff hopes alive

Since their opening loss to Red Star Belgrade on October 4 (77-80), the Parisians have come a long way notes Le Parisien. With 18 wins in 33 games, they secured their play-in ticket last week, despite a narrow loss in Madrid (105-104), thanks to Milan’s stumble against Bologna.

But Paris’s ambitions don’t stop there. Currently 10th, tied with Red Star (9th), the club can still hope for more. They’re just one win behind the group of teams ranked 5th to 8th. If they finish 7th or 8th, the Parisians will have home-court advantage in the first round of the play-in. And in an ideal scenario, they could even grab 6th place, meaning direct qualification for the quarter-finals.

For this to happen, a victory against Berlin is essential. Then, they’ll need several favorable results from direct competitors: Bayern losing to Fenerbahce, Red Star falling to Panathinaikos, Barcelona losing to Bologna, and Anadolu Efes Istanbul being defeated by Kaunas. A Real Madrid win against Partizan would also be welcome, as Paris Basketball doesn’t hold the tiebreaker against the Madrid team.

On the other side, Alba Berlin, bottom of the EuroLeague with only five wins, has nothing left to play for. But beware of overconfidence: the Germans have won two of their rare away victories this season. Paris will need to stay focused to hope for a historic 19th win to conclude the regular phase.
