Norman Powell delivered an exceptional performance in the Miami Heat‘s victory over the New Orleans Pelicans (125-106). The American guard set a new personal record by making nine 3-pointers on twelve attempts, finishing the game with 34 points in just 29 minutes of play.
A Scorching Start That Set the Tone
From the opening tip, Norman Powell set the tone by making his first four 3-point attempts. After just six minutes of play, the former Clippers player already had 15 points on the board, allowing the Heat to build an early lead (29-23).
« I told Erik Spoelstra, his staff and even the guys in the locker room that winning was mandatory tonight especially after losing the first game of the back-to-back, » Norman Powell explained after the game. « We had to set the tone and impose ourselves to be ready for the upcoming road trip. »
The Heat’s outside shooting was decisive in this victory, with six 3-pointers made on the team’s first six attempts. Nikola Jovic (19 points, 6 rebounds) also contributed with 13 points in the first quarter, maintaining pressure on the Pelicans despite their 68% shooting accuracy.
A Performance That Strengthens His All-Star Ambitions
This exceptional performance is part of an excellent season for Powell, who is averaging 24 points on 48% shooting and 40% from 3-point range since the start of the 2025-2026 campaign. The guard doesn’t hide his All-Star Game ambitions after missing it last season.
« Everything felt perfect in my shot whether it was the release point or my balance, » Norman Powell said. « If defenders were behind the 3-point line, it was an open shot for me. After making my first shots, everything clicked. »
« I definitely think I have a strong case, » Norman Powell says regarding the All-Star Game. « Last year, I learned not to be obsessed with it, but I want to go and I think I deserve it. My peers in the league tell me after games that I’m an All-Star and that I should be there. »
This victory allows the Heat to bounce back after their loss to the Wolves, before starting a four-game road trip. The Pelicans, hampered by 24 turnovers that generated 17 points for Miami, remain at the bottom of the Western Conference.
