Damian Lillard adds a new role to his impressive resume. The star point guard of the Portland Trail Blazers officially announced Saturday night that he’s becoming the general manager of Weber State’s basketball team, his alma mater. The announcement was made during the Weber State Basketball Alumni Classic held in Ogden, Utah.
This appointment comes just two weeks after the 34-year-old signed a three-year contract extension with Portland. Despite his NBA obligations, Lillard wants to fully invest himself in developing his former college team.
A return to roots motivated by passion
« My relationship with Coach Eric Duft and this program means a tremendous amount to me, and seeing the program’s success is close to my heart, » Lillard said during his campus appearance. « I think I can do a lot to help the program succeed, to help players individually continue to develop their careers after college, it’s something I’m passionate about. »
As general manager, the nine-time All-Star will work closely with the technical staff and athletic department leadership. His mission will be to provide expertise, mentorship, and guidance, using his experience gained at both collegiate and professional levels to elevate the program.
Lillard’s legacy at Weber State is already considerable. Between 2008 and 2012, he was named Big Sky Conference Player of the Year twice and earned three First Team All-Big Sky selections. Named Third Team All-American in his final year, he had his number 1 jersey retired by the university.
Currently rehabilitating from a left Achilles tendon tear suffered in April, Lillard is not expected to play during the 2025-2026 season. This period will allow him to dedicate more time to his new responsibilities with Weber State.
