The Houston Rockets face a critical juncture in their first-round playoff series, with their leading scorer Kevin Durant‘s availability for Game 2 hanging in the balance. After missing the team’s 107-98 Game 1 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, the 37-year-old superstar remains questionable for Tuesday’s contest.
Durant’s injury timeline and recovery progress
Durant suffered the knee bruise during practice on Wednesday, forcing him to sit out Saturday’s series opener. Coach Ime Udoka provided an update following Monday’s practice session, revealing that Durant « went through about half of Houston’s practice » and « will be a game-time decision Tuesday. »
The injury appeared minor initially, with Udoka calling it hopefully … a one-game thing ahead of Game 1. Medical imaging showed no structural damage in Durant’s knee, offering some optimism for the Rockets’ playoff hopes.
However, mobility remains the primary concern for the veteran forward. « The pain tolerance is one thing, but actually moving and feeling comfortable doing all the movements is going to be the biggest thing, » Udoka explained on Monday.
Rockets struggle without their star scorer
Durant’s absence was clearly felt in Game 1, where the Rockets managed just 98 points despite attempting 27 more shots than the Lakers. Houston shot less than 40% from the field, highlighting their offensive struggles without their primary scoring threat.
The former MVP averaged a team-high 26 points per game during the regular season, making his potential return crucial for the Rockets’ championship aspirations. His shotmaking ability and veteran leadership could prove decisive in evening the series.
Game 2 is scheduled for 10:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday in Los Angeles, where the Rockets will look to bounce back from their disappointing opener. Durant’s status will likely be determined closer to tip-off, as the team monitors his comfort level and mobility throughout the day.
