Cooper Flagg has officially been named the 2025-2026 NBA Rookie of the Year, capping off a historic debut season with the Dallas Mavericks. The teenage sensation edged out Charlotte Hornets guard Kon Knueppel in an incredibly tight race, receiving 56 first-place votes compared to Knueppel’s 44 from a panel of 100 media members.
The final tally saw Flagg finish with 412 total vote points to Knueppel’s 386, a margin of just 26 points that represents the second smallest gap between the top two finishers since the current voting format began in 2002-2003. At 19 years old, Flagg becomes the second-youngest player to win the award, trailing only LeBron James.
A season of historic achievements
Flagg’s rookie campaign was nothing short of spectacular, averaging 21.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game. These numbers placed him in elite company, joining Larry Bird, Michael Jordan and Luka Doncic as the only rookies to average at least 20 points, six rebounds and four assists in the 50 seasons since the NBA-ABA merger.
The 2.06m forward led all rookies in scoring while ranking second among qualifiers in assists and third in rebounds. Despite Dallas finishing with a disappointing 26-56 record after trading Anthony Davis to create financial flexibility, Flagg joined Jordan as the only rookies in NBA history to lead their teams in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals.
Flagg’s age made his accomplishments even more remarkable. He became the youngest player in NBA history to record games of 35, 40, 45 and 50 points, setting the single-game scoring record for a teenager with 51 points in an April 3rd loss to Orlando. He also recorded three of the four 45-point performances by a teenager in league history.
Knueppel’s strong case falls short
Knueppel mounted a formidable challenge throughout the season, averaging 18.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists while shattering the rookie record for 3-pointers made with 273. The fourth overall pick played a crucial role in Charlotte’s remarkable turnaround, helping the Hornets improve by 25 wins to finish 44-38 before falling in the Eastern Conference play-in round.

Multiple voters reportedly cited Knueppel’s struggles during the play-in tournament as a factor in their decision to vote for Flagg. « I see the games every night. I can check the box scores, » Flagg said when asked about following Knueppel’s performance. « I think also I was watching Kon just because that’s one of my brothers. »
The close race between the former Duke roommates provided one of the most compelling Rookie of the Year battles in recent memory, with both players establishing themselves as cornerstones for their respective franchises moving forward.
