The Chicago Bulls are facing another major transition. After six seasons at the helm, Billy Donovan officially announced his decision to step down as head coach this Tuesday, following extensive discussions with team ownership about the franchise’s future direction.

The 60-year-old coach held an option in his contract for next season but elected to leave after a series of meetings with Bulls ownership over the past week. Despite the organization’s clear desire to retain him, Donovan chose to step aside to allow the incoming basketball operations leader complete freedom in building their staff.

A mutual decision for organizational clarity

« After a series of thoughtful and extensive discussions with ownership regarding the future of the organization, I have decided to step away as the head coach of the Chicago Bulls, to allow the search process to unfold, » Donovan said in a statement released by the team. « I believe it is in the best interest of the Bulls, to allow the new leader to build out the staff as they see fit. »

Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf emphasized that retaining Donovan was never in question from the organization’s perspective. « We wanted Billy to continue as our head coach — that was never in question. But through honest conversations, we all agreed that giving our new Head of Basketball Operations the right to build out his staff was the most important thing for the future of this franchise. That is the kind of person Billy is — he put the Bulls first. »

Donovan’s departure comes just weeks after the April 6th firings of Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Artūras Karnisovas and General Manager Marc Eversley, marking a complete organizational overhaul for a franchise that has missed the playoffs for four consecutive seasons.

Looking ahead to a new chapter

The veteran coach expressed deep gratitude for his time in Chicago, acknowledging the relationships built during his tenure. « My gratitude for this community and this organization is permanent, » Donovan stated. « Thank you Jerry and Michael for giving me this opportunity and more importantly, for the relationship that has been forged. I was so blessed to be able to work with such great owners. »

Despite receiving interest from multiple organizations during his Bulls tenure, including the New York Knicks last offseason and the University of North Carolina during this season, Donovan maintained his commitment to completing his contract. He plans to continue his coaching career and is expected to be a viable target for NBA organizations moving forward.

The Bulls have already begun their search for a new head of basketball operations, receiving permission to interview several candidates including Minnesota Timberwolves GM Matt Lloyd, Detroit Pistons senior vice president Dennis Lindsey, and Cleveland Cavaliers GM Mike Gansey. The organization aims to hire their new decision-maker around the mid-May draft combine, setting the stage for a comprehensive rebuild of the franchise’s basketball operations.
