Careful back-to-back management for the King

LeBron James did not play in the Los Angeles Lakers game against the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday night (107-91 loss). The California franchise cited multiple injuries to justify the absence of their 41-year-old star, who remained uncertain until an hour and a half before tip-off.

« Every back-to-back of the season remains to be determined »

The Lakers officially declared James out due to left foot joint arthritis and sciatica. Jarred Vanderbilt took his place in the starting lineup against the Spurs. This absence is part of an injury management strategy for the veteran who is in his 23rd NBA season.

James had missed the first 14 games of the season because of this sciatica affecting his lower back and extending into his right leg. Since his return, he has yet to play both games of a back-to-back.

The day before, the King had shined in the 111-103 victory against the New Orleans Pelicans, posting 30 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists in 33 minutes of play. This performance helped the Lakers secure their third consecutive win.

« Every back-to-back, for the rest of the season, remains to be determined. I’m 41 years old. I have the most minutes in NBA history. Remember that answer well. »

Lakers coach JJ Redick explained the decision to rest his star: « A lot of things are based on his injuries and their management. His foot is generally painful after a game. That’s the main issue. I talked to him today in the dining area. We were hoping he could reach the point where he can play back-to-backs with his body. But this period and this month, it will be difficult to say that. »

« We hope he will be available, but a lot depends on how he wakes up the next morning, » Redick added. In other medical news, backup guard Gabe Vincent made his return after nine games missed due to a lower back injury, with playing time limited to about 18 minutes.
