Having an excellent season with the Memphis Grizzlies, Spanish basketball’s new star Santi Aldama (2.13 m, 24 years) is the only NBA player called up. He will try to lead Spain to a double alongside 8 European champions from 2022: Dario Brizuela, Lorenzo Brown, Alberto Diaz, Willy Hernangomez, Juancho Hernangomez, Xabi Lopez-Arostegui, Joel Parra and Jaime Pradilla.
Sergio Scariolo has chosen to add experienced but less established national team players: Alberto Abalde, Josep Puerto, Yankuba Sima and Santi Yusta; as the Roja must now do without its legends Rudy Fernandez and Sergio Llull. Two young players complete the group, which must be reduced to 12 by August 28: Sergio De Larrea from Valencia, and Madrid’s interior player Eli Ndiaye.
Two young Spanish talents are absent, although they were called up during February’s qualifications: Hugo Gonzalez and Izan Almansa. The Madrid prodigy was just drafted by the Boston Celtics and must start his overseas adventure; while Almansa, undrafted, is expected to sign with the Philadelphia Sixers after his Australian venture.
The Spanish team will begin their preparation in Madrid on Monday, July 28. They will notably play two preparation matches against France (August 14 in Badalona and August 16 in Paris) then against the World Champions Germany (August 21 in Madrid and August 23 in Cologne) before the start of the competition in late August.
