NBA Hall of Famer George Gervin challenges NFL QB Caleb Williams’ « Iceman » trademark filing in heated legal dispute

A trademark battle is brewing between two generations of sports legends over one of basketball’s most iconic nicknames. George Gervin, the NBA Hall of Famer who has been known as « The Iceman » for over four decades, is challenging Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams’ recent attempt to trademark the moniker.
The controversy began when Caleb Williams Holding Inc. filed four trademark applications on March 16 with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for « Iceman. » Williams earned the nickname during the 2025 season for his clutch late-game performances that helped the Bears secure their first playoff victory in 15 years.
« I’ve been the Iceman for 40-something years, » Gervin told ESPN. « I never thought anybody would try to trademark it. He kind of knocked me out the box. » The San Antonio Spurs legend, whose number 44 jersey was retired in 1987, was clearly caught off guard by Williams’ move.
A complex three-way legal battle emerges
In response to Williams’ filing, Gervin Interests LLC submitted two trademark applications on March 20 for « Iceman » and « Iceman 44, » referencing the jersey number Gervin wore throughout his legendary NBA career. However, the situation becomes even more complicated with UFC legend Chuck Liddell having filed for a trademark in 2023 for « Chuck ‘The Iceman’ Liddell. »
According to trademark attorney Josh Gerben of Gerben IP, the case presents unique challenges. « George will have a 30-day period in which he can file a formal opposition to Caleb’s applications and say they shouldn’t be registered because I was using these trademarks long ago and the public associates the name with me, » Gerben explained.
The attorney also noted that the USPTO could potentially refuse both Williams’ and Gervin’s applications due to Liddell’s earlier filing. « The USPTO could easily, easily refuse Caleb Williams’ application and George Gervin’s application because of Chuck’s pending applications waiting there first, » Gerben said.
Williams’ trademark application covers a wide range of goods and services, including athletic sporting goods, water bottles, T-shirts, sweatshirts, jerseys, hats, eyewear, and downloadable posters and digital trading cards.
Despite the legal tensions, Gervin expressed hope for a peaceful resolution. « I’m quite sure me and him going to get a chance to talk, » Gervin said. « We’re both men. I’m an older man. He’s a younger man. His potential is great and he does have ice in his veins. But that name is already taken up. »

Jerald Barisano, president and CEO of Gervin Global Management, made their intentions clear: « We’re not happy and we’ll let it play out, but we’re not running away from this guy. We’re going to fight him to tooth and nail to the end. »
