The Los Angeles Lakers can finally breathe. Luka Doncic officially signed his contract extension this Saturday, committing to three additional years and $165 million with the California franchise. The deal includes a player option for the 2028-2029 season, as confirmed by his agent Bill Duffy to ESPN.
« I’m truly grateful to the Lakers organization, my teammates, and the fans for welcoming me and my family with so much support and kindness from day one, » Doncic said in a statement. « This is an incredible organization, and I truly believe in what we’re building together. I will continue to work as hard as possible to bring another championship to Los Angeles and make the Laker Nation proud. »
A winning bet after February’s historic trade
This extension definitively validates the huge move made by Rob Pelinka during the shocking trade with the Dallas Mavericks last February. The Lakers had traded Anthony Davis to acquire the player who had become the face of the Texas franchise and led them to the NBA finals in 2024.
The 26-year-old Slovenian point guard averaged 28.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 7.7 assists last season between Dallas and Los Angeles. Despite an early elimination in the first round of playoffs against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Doncic showed his commitment to the LA project by actively participating in recruiting Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart this summer.
« Luka is one of the most transcendent players in the game, » Rob Pelinka emphasized during the official announcement. « Luka is an absolute killer on the court, and he combines that with unique generosity and care for the community. Above all, Luka will lead our franchise in pursuit of future championships, a goal that will forever define the Lakers. »
A calculated financial strategy looking ahead to 2028
By choosing a three-year extension instead of the maximum possible four years ($229 million), Doncic opens the door to an even more lucrative contract. In 2028, he could be eligible for a five-year, $417 million deal, potentially making him the first player in history to earn $80 million per season.
This extension officially marks the beginning of the post-LeBron James era in Los Angeles. At 26, Doncic now embodies the future of the Purple and Gold and shows his ambitions: « This is just the beginning. I’m excited to see what’s ahead and continue building something special with this team. »
