Cholet Basket signs Hungarian league’s top scorer

Daylen Kountz, last season’s top scorer in the Hungarian championship averaging nearly 22 points, will wear Cholet Basket’s colors in 2025-2026. This 25-year-old American guard arrives with impressive statistics and significant potential for growth.

A pure scorer to energize Cholet’s offense

After his first professional season with KK Podgorica in 2023-2024 (11.1 points in 23 minutes), Daylen Kountz truly exploded in Hungary with Egis Kormend. Averaging 21.6 points with 52.9% shooting efficiency, including an impressive 45.9% from 3-point range, he dominated the league offensively. In 37 games, he also averaged 4.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 34 minutes per game.

Cholet Basket continues to tap into a talent pool they know well. This isn’t the first time for the Mauges club, which had already recruited from the Hungarian championship in 2021 with Darrin Govens. At the time, Laurent Vila had spotted the player, and Fabrice Lefrançois – who became the Catalan’s assistant – is now at the helm.

A solid college career at Northern Colorado

Before launching his professional career, Daylen Kountz distinguished himself in NCAA. After playing for Colorado and especially Northern Colorado, he shined in 2021-2022 with 21.3 points per game at 42% shooting efficiency. The following season, his output slightly decreased (17.2 points at 33% efficiency), but he remained one of the Bears’ offensive engines.

Earlier, he had stood out at Denver East High School where he led Colorado’s 5A division in scoring, averaging 23.2 points. Known for his scoring abilities, this left-handed player has steadily improved to become a recognized player in the European market.

An ideal profile for Betclic ELITE?

With his ability to create his own shot, outside shooting accuracy, and offensive volume, Daylen Kountz fits the profile Cholet was looking for to strengthen its backcourt ahead of its return to the Champions League (BCL). His low assist ratio (2.8 per game) suggests he could evolve in a combo-guard role, capable of scoring off the dribble while also playing alongside a game-managing point guard like T.J. Campbell (1.77 m, 37 years old).

His ability to adapt to the Betclic ELITE level, which is more athletic and defensively demanding than the Hungarian championship, will be one of the challenges this season for the new CB under Lefrançois.
