Anthony Davis had an eventful first season with the Dallas Mavericks, marked by several injuries including recent surgery. According to ESPN information reported by Shams Charania, the All-Star underwent surgery to repair a retinal detachment that occurred during the season.

Despite this new physical setback, the news is reassuring for the Texas organization. Davis should be fully recovered and available for training camp, marking his true beginnings with the team.

Promising start despite physical issues

Davis’s first experience in a Mavericks jersey had started spectacularly. In his debut, the 32-year-old impressed with a performance of 26 points, 16 rebounds, 7 assists, and 3 blocks, before leaving the game with a groin injury.

This muscle injury then kept him off the court for over a month, confirming persistent concerns about his physical fragility. Davis only played 11 games with Dallas, including two play-in games where he averaged 33.5 points and 9.0 rebounds.

His prolonged absence, combined with Kyrie Irving’s knee injury, complicated the Mavericks’ plans. Despite these difficulties, the team managed to qualify for the play-in, exceeding many observers’ expectations.

A central role expected for the upcoming season

With Cooper Flagg’s arrival, the Mavericks now have a key piece for the future. The 6’9″ player from Duke is considered the franchise’s long-term cornerstone.

Davis’s health will be crucial for the Mavericks’ ambitions in 2025-2026. At 32, the ten-time All-Star veteran will need to carry a heavy responsibility. Especially with Irving’s unavailability at the start of the season. The management led by Nico Harrison is counting on Davis’s complete return to form to revive the Texas team’s ambitions.
